TENANT TIP #14 - PERSONAL FIRE SAFETY You should have at least one working smoke detector in your unit. Test it once a month. Keep a roll of duct tape and use it to block smoke from entering your unit through spaces around your door and vents. If you are unable to use the stairs in an emergency tell your landlord so that your unit can be added to the fire safety plan. Plan at least two escape routes (in case one is blocked by smoke) and practise using them. For more information to help you survive a fire or to have a fire inspector speak at your Tenants Association meeting, call the Fire Department at 798-8825.
