TENANT TIP: PROPERTY STANDARDS The cities of Ottawa, Nepean, Gloucester and Vanier all have a property standards by-law. This by-law sets out the minimum standards for properties. The by-law addresses such things as faulty plumbing and electricity, leaky windows and roofs, intercoms, garbage chutes and snow removal. If you are having problems with any of the above you should first write a letter to your landlord. If the landlord fails to rectify the problem within a reasonable time, you should call property standards. An inspector will come out to view the problem and will order your landlord to do necessary work. The Federation recently put together a brochure summarizing the Property Standards by-law. If you would like a copy please call the Tenants Hotline at 594-5429.
