A not-for-profit organization dedicated to decent affordable housing for tenants in Chicago. They operate a tenants rights hotline that averages 10,000 calls a year, organize in HUD subsidized prepayment buildings, operate a VISTA program with five community organizations, provide trainings and workshops across Chicago, and participate in citywide efforts on code enforcement, development without displacement, affordable housing and more.

ITU provides the following services: (1) lease-breaking before end of term; (2) pressuring landlords for repairs with inspections and rent withholding; (3) getting legal representation for tenants being sued for eviction; and (4) assisting tenants in getting refunds of their security deposits. ITU is not a legal services corporation, but its Executive Director is an attorney and they can recommend tenant attorneys.
