Lawyer Referral Service
If you need a lawyer and don't know which one to choose to help you with your particular problem, the Oregon State Bar Lawyer Referral Service is available to assist you. The Lawyer Referral Service is sponsored and supervised by the Oregon State Bar to help persons in need of legal advice find the right lawyer quickly. There is no charge for this referral system.Call the referral service from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. In the Portland area, the number is 684-3763; from any place else in Oregon, call our toll-free number, 1-800-452-7636. Give the Lawyer Referral assistant your name, telephone number and a brief description of your legal problem. The assistant will match your problem with a lawyer in your geographic area and give you the name, address and telephone number to call.
Call the lawyer and make an appointment for a consultation. Please remember to keep your appointment. If, for any reason, you find you cannot keep your appointment, call the lawyer and cancel well in advance...the lawyer has reserved this time for you.
If you are referred to a lawyer through the Lawyer Referral Service, you will be entitled to an in-office consultation for a fee of $35. If there is additional work which needs to be done, the fee for that work should be arranged between you and the lawyer at this first interview. The Lawyer Referral Service does not have information on what fees attorneys charge beyond the initial consultation.
If you are not sure whether or not you need to speak with an attorney, you may still want to call the service. The Lawyer Referral assistants can help you define your legal problem and decide what type of assistance you need. If you do not need or cannot afford an attorney, they can give you the number for our local legal aid office or any consumer group or government agency that may be able to help you. You may also be eligible for a referral through the bar's Modest Means Program, which offers reduced fee legal services for qualifying clients. Information on this program is available through the Lawyer Referral Service.
