Quinn for Council
Councilmember Tom Duane has been elected to the State Senate, and Christine Quinn, his former chief of staff, is running to succeed him in the Feb. 16 special election. Christine is a committed progressive who has long been active in tenant issues. She has been endorsed by Met Council and we strongly urge our members to get involved in this race.
In 1989 Christine became the lead organizer for the Housing Justice Campaign, a project of the Association for Neighborhood Housing Development. This diverse, citywide coalition fought for the creation of more affordable housing and for better policies for moderate-income and low-income New Yorkers. As Tom Duanes chief of staff, Christine continued to fight for tenants. She organized neighborhood campaigns to save tenants homes and to protect and improve affordable housing stock in every neighborhood in the district. Most valuable was her great strategic mind; while working for Tom, Christine helped Met Council and other groups defeat pro-landlord bills, and pass pro-tenant bills. No one running for Toms seat can work the City Council as well as she does. We need Christine Quinn in the City Council.
There are five candidates running in the district, centered on Greenwich Village and Chelsea. This race provides Mayor Giuliani and his conservative pro-landlord supporters with an opportunity to take this districts progressive voice away. With your help, we can stop them.
Many of you have already been more than generous with your time and support. But the campaign needs your help more than ever. Please volunteer to campaign in your building or other big buildings in the district. And even if you dont live in the district, you can still help. Christine Quinn on the Council will help all tenants in the city.
