Rent Guidelines Board Schedule

The city Rent Guidelines Board, which sets annual increases for the 1,000,000 rent-stabilized households in New York City, voted on preliminary guidelines on May 8: 4% for a one-year lease and 6% for a two-year lease, with a $15 “poor tax” on apartments below $500.

Tenants must demand lower guidelines and the end of the RGB’s “poor tax”—the surcharge on low-rent apartments, which is contributing to the disappearance of apartments affordable to low-income New Yorkers. With this year’s spike in fuel costs, landlords are demanding steep increases. Owners’ profits have increased 11% for two years, while tenant incomes have declined.

Tenants must protest and testify against high increases and the “poor tax.”
