Here's the only advice I can give you, which was my own experience:

I had an equally annoying landlord (i.e., hassled endlessly about payment, despite always receiving it) and I too wished to break my lease. I broke my lease in August, while the renewal date was the following April. I did give up my security deposit, but did not pay rent for the month I left--told them in writing to help themselves to the deposit instead. I gave a month's notice.

They made one phone call to me, which I did not return, and I never heard from them again. Moving to the UK, I doubt you would be followed. As a friend who owns rental property said, it costs more in legal fees to go after you than it is worth.

It helped too that my building was huge, with many units. Is yours similar? It makes you less worthy a target...
