Yes. The landlord sends you a non-payment notice (dispossess) telling
you to answer in housing court. You fail to appear in housing court
(thinking perhaps that you don't have to go because you don't owe anything).
You default (lose the case because you didn't show up.) You get a notice
from the marshal and ignore it (perhaps after contacting the landlord and
hearing you didn't have to worry about it because you are current in your
rent). You get evicted. This happens more often than I like to think about.

Keep all you rent receipts in good order, send the landlord a copy of your
accounting by certified mail, return receipt requested, and promptly answer any
legal notices.
