The Landlord, by Malachy McCourt

Rubbish of Royalty
Why we shouldn't be smitten with kings
and queens
By Malachy McCourt

....Another low form of life in our society is the one that
is called the landlord. Everywhere we tread the land,
there is someone who claims to own it. When you
look at those who are lords of the land and ladies of
the land, you find revolting, slimy, under-the-stones
creatures like Leona Helmsley, Trump and Matlock
wheeling, dealing, lying, selling human beings,
corrupting politicians and causing misery, all in the
name of free enterprise.
.....
All over the city people are crammed into tiny spaces,
paying half their salaries for the privilege of
supporting landlords whilst never seeing daylight. Be
late one day with the rent and bang comes the
eviction notice. No matter how long you rent an
apartment, if it's 50 years, you have no more rights
than the first day you set foot in the joint. And if the
landlord decides to make the lobby a replica of a
rundown warehouse, there is little you can do about
it. What's the solution?
Send all people with titles lords, land and otherwise
and their vassals and managing agents to Mars with
a week's supply of food, three days of water and a
piss purifier so they can drink each other's urine and
rent caves to each other.
Sez I to myself.
