No Fire Escape

Posted by Denise J. on May 30, 2000 at 13:52:36:

This may seem like a silly question, but I currently rent a 2 bedroom in Parkslope, Brooklyn (NY state). After moving into the apartment, my roomamte and I noticed that what had looked like a fire escape out the back is actually a rickety terrace with a clothesline attached to it. There is no fire escape stairwell, and should a fire occur, we would only have one way down (through the main stairwell). Short of leaping out a four-story window, what are our rights? Isn't it required by law to have at least 2 exits?
