Paint fumes in appartment: what can I do?

Posted by Roman Sulzhyk on June 06, 2000 at 19:55:54:

Hi everyone:

I found this site - it's a really useful resource for renters. I was looking in the legal documents, but thought I would ask here in case any of you know how to deal with this.

I live in Midtown, Olympia House - 44th and 2nd, and a really badly managed building in case any of you ever want to move in. Today, they were doing some painting in appartment next to me, and now my appartment is totally stunk with the pain fumes.

What can I do about this? Can I not pay rent for the month / the days when it is unbreathable, charge them for the hotel, what? I don't mind going to court over this, etc. etc. I basicallly would like a reference to a law or something which I can quote in my angry letter to the bastards. I will get your recommendation, then write a letter to the management office tomorrow (if I survive the night :-) )

Thanks a lot!

Roman
