I am a long-term tenant in the only rent-stabilized apt. remaining in a 9-unit old-law Manhattan tenement. A letter from the landlord last month stated that they will no longer accept direct automatic payment from a bank for the monthly rent. Tenants must mail a personal check or a money order in the envelope provided by the landlord. It is a real nuisance to order checks, write a check, pay abank fee for the check, add a stamp, mail it, etc. The automatic payment from the bank is a guaranteed check, arrives on time, and has all the information on the check itself.
Is there a regulation that says that the landlord can specify what form the payment sent must take?
Thank you very much.
