A friend of mine is breaking the lease for his apt in NYC, and he wrote a letter to the landlord to assign the lease to me. The landlord responded, my friend will be released from the lease, but the assignment was not approved. There is no reason for the landlord to refuse the assignment because I have a good credit history and enough annual income for the apt. After a discussion I had with the landlord, he admitted that he wants to raise the rent, since this apt will not be a rent-stabilized after the current lease.
So basically what he wants from me is either to forget about the apt, or to take it (sign a completely new lease, not taking over the current lease) and suck up the huge rent increase. Of course I want the apt, not the increase.
Would it make sense to file a complaint somewhere?
