: I am currently under lease in a rent-controlled/stabilized building on the Upper East side of Manhattan. There are at least 14 units in the building.
: My lease is up at the end of November and I am planning on leaving early.
: I was told that I signed a rider to my lease stating that early termination of the lease will result in the forfeiture of my security deposit. I am giving ample time to re-lease the apartment and I was also told that there was a 30-day cancellation option to this rider but that they did not accept it.
: Is there anything I can do to get the security deposit back?
: Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don't think he can do that with the security deposit. Try calling the Attorney General's office for information. Another thing you could do is to say to the owner that you want to assign the lease to someone else to finish out the lease term. If he denies consent, then I believe he has to return the deposit. It's worth a try.
