We live in Brooklyn, in a privately owned apartment building with 20 units. We moved in over 2 years ago and signed a rent-stabilized lease that included a "no pets" clause. Nearly 3 months ago we rescued a stray dog from the streets. We made an honest attempt to place him in a no kill shelter or home, but were unsuccessful. During that time we naturally grew attached to the dog and decided we wanted to keep him. We've been told by our neighbors that he is quiet, does not bark, and is not a nuisance. We haven't been hiding him and take him out several times a day. Our landlords don't live in the building and although they come regularly they have never seen him (again, we are not hiding him from them).

We've been informed by our super that a tenant called the landlord and told them that we have a dog. Now the landlords are calling the super to tell him to tell us to call them.

We've heard stories from people in our building about the landlords causing trouble in the past, including harrassing phone calls, but they have yet to contact us directly. We're aware of the 1983 pet clause but we're not sure how to proceed in our interactions with the landlord. We don't consider giving up the dog an option. Our lease seems to include a section on the possibility of being evicted AND still having to pay the rent for the remainder of the lease, which seems outrageous.
