You could take this to small claims court (unless another court has jurisdiction over landlord/tenant matters in your state). You would need to prove that you rented the apartment -- lacking a lease, you could show cancelled rent checks or money order receipts. There are some self-help legal books from nolo press at http://www.nolo.com that you might read to prepare yourself.

Whether it is worth the time and effort and fees to go to court to recover the $200+ or just move on and take loss is up to you to decide.
