I got lost reading your story, but let me say what I think is the general principle: the tenant is responsible for paying rent for the entire period of their written or unwritten contract, whether that is one year or one month. The main exception is that your obligation to pay rent ends when someone else moves into the apartment you vacated.

So if you were on a month-to-month because the written lease expired, the landlord is entitled to a full month's rent for every month or part of a month you were in the apartment.
