Regarding your departing roommate, it depends on what agreement you had with
him. Whose name is on your lease -- yours, or both ? Did you have a
separate roommate agreement with him (written or oral) that covered these
issues ?

Since roommate arrangements can be as informal or formal as the participants
want, its important to think about these issues prior to taking on a new
roommate, particularly if you are relying on the roommate to pay part of
your rent.
