Modifications to the apartment

Posted by Chris on September 07, 2000 at 16:57:31:

I live in a rent stabilized apartment and am 1 month into a year lease on the Upper West side. The landlord recently put in a sprinkler system into the apartment, which would be a good thing ordinarily. But, they put in a 2 inch diameter blank pipe which is outside of the wall. On top of the door there is a 6 inch red hub. Both are extremely ugly. Also, there are holes around the pipe to the hallway and the apartment next door.

So noise from the hallway has increased, cigarette smoke from the next door apartment comes in, and mice crawling in the holes knock wall debris into the apartment. The landlord says they will fix it in the next 6 months. Is there anything I can do to get him to fix it sooner, or can we demand the landlord lower the rent?

thanks
chris
