If I ever leased again, I would negotiate an escape clause allowing me to get out of the lease, perhaps for a small penalty. One of the #1 questions on these message boards is "How can I break my lease?" And people are shocked when they find out they can't break it. They then end up stuck next to whatever sorts the landlord rented the other apartments to: noisy, violent, abusive, drug dealers, thieves... Remember the worst person you ever met--now imagine having to live next to him for a year. And then there are people who get transferred, want to change jobs, want to move far away, decide they want to move back to the place they were born and raised...
