How about taking some pictures with a disposable cameras and making at least 2 sets of prints and give one set to the landlord, with a letter saying here are the pictures of a leaking skylight and here is the damage to the carpet or floor....as of today you acknowledge that YOU as the landlord are responsible for any and all damages occuring from you lack of hiring a professional to fix the leak....

I will also demand my full security deposit back as any damages caused be the leaking skylight is to be absorded by YOU the landlord.

That should get his attention.
