I don't understand what you mean by cashing a check 18 days before you were going to rent an the in law unit. Do you mean that you made an oral agreement with the landlord to rent the unit, then paid a deposit and moved in 18 days later ? There is nothing wrong with that, your deposit secured the apartment for you and your tenancy (rent) begins the day you moved in. You might want to sign a clearly written lease with your landlord.
