Landlords _______ caused family to split

Posted by Gary on October 16, 2000 at 05:31:05:

In 1990 I was able to find a 150 year old farmhouse to rent.
At the time we were a family of 7. The house was gutted and I
had an agreement with the landlord, that I would pay rent on a
month to month basis if they provided the materials nessesary
to make the house liveable. This agreement worked great, until
I went to work.(Public Assistance paid the rent etc.)The electric
service was the major problem, the main breaker continually buzzed
and burned out! And the Utility bill was outrageous. I asked the
landlord in 1998 to have it looked at,the response was "I'll
send someone to check it",to date no person has checked the
service. The bill eventually became $2000.00 even though I tried
to pay the bill. Of course the service was terminated. With no
place to go I figured we could get a generator until we found
another place, needless to say after 9 years of acumulation 2
dogs and 3 boys, finding one did not happen before the generator
burned as well. she couldn't handle the situation (I can't blame
her) and she left me with our boys and we have become estranged
I do not beleive this is right. the landlord sued for rent and
won. They refuse to evict me, there are 7 landlords to my surprise
the Judge indicated they were a partnership, and they needed an
attorney. I hae since found an apartment, but my belongings are
still there, wood stove, sattelite dishes, personal belongings.
Can they lock me out? N.Y.S. County of Broome. Please any info?
