Supers and new Landlord

Posted by Irena on October 31, 2000 at 12:22:37:

My family has been the super of this building in NYC for the past 15 years, we don't have signed contract but for our services we got a free apartment and $300 a month. About 3 years ago, someone else bought the building and still wanted us as the super. After owning the building for about a year, the landlord told us that he needed our apartment for his personal use as an office and told us to move out, luckily there was another apartment available on the very same floor and we moved into that one but now we have to pay rent for that apartment (we are still the super). After we moved out of our apartment, we found out that he never used the apartment for an office and instead he is renting it out, so he basically lied to us.

My father quit the super job after a year, and now he is a tenant in the building, the building has no super on premises (it 20 apartments) and the condition has gotten really poor.

Is there any actions we can take against this man or is it just tough luck for us now that we lost the apartment?

Thanks! Any feedback is most appreciated.
