Ugh!
My fiance and I moved into a friend's apt.when she moved out and we did not tell the landlord. It's rent stabilized. We were desparate to find some affordable housing in New York City.Any way, my friend just received a letter stating refusal to renew her lease when it expires at the end of March due to the fact that this is no longer her primary residency. She doesn't care about the apartment, but we'd love to find some way to stay. The letter says if she doesn't give up the apt. by March 31st, the apartment's rent will go up to market value, which we can't afford. My questions are:
1) do we have a chance in hell of keeping this place? We can pay some more rent, but not another $1000.
2)How quickly do we have to worry about them trying to boot us. The end of the letter said that the landlord might proceed with an "action of declaratory relief" 30 days after the papers were served. What does this mean?
Help!
