Check with the buildings department, chech the FAR (floor area ratio). I think your LL is planing to buid an extension. Building extensions are legal as long as they conform with current zoning regulations and fall within the allowed FAR.

: I live in a tenament style building in Manhattan, 4 stories, 6 apartments with a yard in back. I've heard that the landlord is planning on erecting an addition in the yard. Is this legal? I'm under the impression that the zoning regs require a 30 ft rear yard. Can he do this with a variance of some sort & if so, how hard would it be for him for him to get one. I'm dreading the idea of the mess & noise if something gets built out there.
