Illegal apartments, and the brave owners and renters who keep them, are truly a G-dsend. Restricting zoning laws, rent regulation, and general population pressure have increased the demand for housing in the metro NYC area. Although the motivations of the illegal apartment's owners and renters is self-serving, they nonetheless benefit all renters in the community, by providing additional housing and lowering the price of housing as they satisfy the demands of those who need it.

Many politcians I know of wisely turn a "blind eye" to illegal housing in their neighborhoods even though they may speak out against it in public. This is becuase they recognize the benefits the additional apartments provide and the chaos that would result if they were all shut down, depriving families of housing and small homeowners of income.

Not disclosing a shared meter, as in this situation, is wrong. The poster indicates she is renting the legal house, not the illegal apartment, which is occupied by the landlord's relatives.

Thank G-d some people have the fortitude to see beyond the ignorance of those who denounce illegal apartments. These men and women are true heros for us all.
