While everything was said regarding the pros and cons of an illegal apartment, the one thing that has not been said is the fact that an illegal apartment is a TEMPORARY home. The conditions, fair use and agreement regarding an illegal apartment benefit everyone including the tenants, and the homeowners (landlords) only benefit if the conditions are kept habitable and maintained for the duration of the tenancy.

Again common sense dictate that if the situation you're in seems dangerous and beyond your control, please make arrangements to move and get the hell out, instead of worrying about the money.

Of course if illegal rentals were reported and the laws for them enforced on a regular basis, the overcrowding we are experiencing now for legal and rent stabilized apartments today will increase threefold to accommodate all the displaced families force to move out of their illegal homes.

Don't agree to live somewhere you feel uncomfortable with and beyond your control.

Good luck.

: please, someone with a little more online time: post a couple of those "11 people die in fire in illegal apts" articles for "ken". maybe he'll read them when the drugs where off!
