I am in a similar situation and have been fighting this now for the past year. You may want to seek the advice of a lawyer. I believe if the leaseholder returns to the apartment (even temporarily), it will be more difficult for the landlord to get you out (that would be "the cure"). I suspect the landlord sees an opportunity to make more money by turning over the apartment. So don't expecthim/her to be sympathetic or ethical when it comes to adding your name to the lease.
