I have spent the past six weeks speaking with charitable organizations, four of which have agreed in writing to assist me with rent arrears. Now my landlord has told me that he will only accept a certified check from me. (The way these organizations work is that none will issue a check until you have the necessary commitment letters from all, which I now have, and the checks are made out to the landlord.) Does anyone know if the housing court can force the landlord to accept these checks from a third party (made out to the landlord)? Is there a precedent I can cite?
I have petitioned the housing court and will be appearing Friday morning to argue my case, with a final judgment enforceable on Tuesday if I lose.
Thank you so much.
