it can be tricky, esp if you aren't in the city at the time. when i was first moving here, i came to visit a couple of times and stayed as long as possible to find a place. i lucked out really, we found a cheap apt that rented month to month. so we moved in and later found a better place. i guess the only thing i can say is to watch the classifieds (esp in the Voice) like a hawk. the online classifieds for the Voice get updated almost every day, so if you're in town, jump on whatever you can find that isn't unbearable. you can always move out later ... :)

: I just want to mention how difficult it is to find a place directly through the owner, particularly if you are not from NY. Any specific advice as to how to find these places?
