My fiance and I rent an apartment in an old 3-family house in Astoria. With growing concern over the upcoming hot summer months, I inquired about the power situation in the house. The landlord stated that the wiring in the house is old, not "220", and our apartment would tolerate perhaps only one A/C at 6000 BTU in the bedroom, and nowhere else in the apt.(which has 6 rooms!). When I asked him how he planned to solve this problem, he answered, "fans".

In addition, the fuse box to the whole buliding is located in the basement apartment, not ours, so, should a fuse blow, we would have to bother our neighbor to switch it on. He claims that to fix the power problem would constitute a major rewiring of the whole building, which he has no intention of doing. Our lease is very rudimentary and does not go into any details about landlord responsibility in these matters. Is there any legal recourse for us?
