Tear down the walls ?

Posted by Susan on June 03, 2001 at 17:58:03:

Hello, We (my fiance and me) both live in a rent stabilized building in Manhattan. Currently we each occupy apartments next to each other. As we plan to marry, we'd like to remove the wall that separates our apartments and make one larger apartment. My boyfriend was ready to take a sledgehammer to the wall, but I thought we should mention this to the landlord first. The landlord got all angry at this idea. He said there is "no way" we could combine the apartments, and that if we even tried we'd be evicted. He mumbled something about it being a retaining wall.

Is this correct ? I don't see why the landlord would be concenred, after all, we'd do the work ourselves, we're not asking him to pay for anything. And the apartments we occupy now are small - after we get married we'd need a larger apartment. Please answer with any advice on this situation.
