When you say you signed the lease, did you sign at the bottom along with your other roommates; at the top of the lease, what names of tenant(s) appear? As far as a brokers commission is concerned, you are not liable for another commission, period, and LL's arrangement with this broker is HIS problem-who is this broker? If LL requires that the commission has to be paid as a condition for you to contimue to reside in the apt, that's called a "conditional rental" and it's a violation of the rent stabilization code.
