Did you try just asking the landlord, explaining the situation? Or how about asking them to put it under a doormat where it can't be seen?

: I live in a New York City rent stabilized apartment. The landlord insists on placing the bill for my rent on the apartment door, as opposed to mailing it to me. When I'm out of town on business, this lets people know that there is no one home. Is there a way of compelling the landlord to mail the bill instead?
