Communication is always key. Send a polite short note via certified return receipt or Fed Ex with your rent check explaining if the notification can be slid under the door when you're not there. Explain your safety/security concern about it being left while you're away and why you're worried about this. If you've been a timely payer of rent, gently point this out. Then wait til the following month and see what happens.

: I live in a New York City rent stabilized apartment. The landlord insists on placing the bill for my rent on the apartment door, as opposed to mailing it to me. When I'm out of town on business, this lets people know that there is no one home. Is there a way of compelling the landlord to mail the bill instead?
: THANKS
