Hoboken is NOT affordable anymore and hasn't been in QUITE a few years. It's become like Williamsburg in Brooklyn -- the rents there are going up just as quickly because of the easy accessibility.

Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn (the remote parts) are still the best bargain. The New York City rule of thumb -- the further out you go, or to places that are not considered "trendy" yet -- the cheaper the rent. You can still find apartments in the $650 to $900 range for a one bedroom apartment in those areas that DO NOT EXIST in either Manhattan or trendy spots in New Jersey.
