Thousands of Sublets. Can I?

Posted by Katya on August 24, 2001 at 22:58:27:

I see the market for apartment sublets in New York City is huge. There are thousands. There are agencies specializing in sublets. Students always sublet when they go on vacation.

Does this mean that many are doing this without their landlords' permission? Do they all have their landlords' permission?

I read somewhere that it is generally not permitted to sublet your apartment; that only you or a family member can live there. If you go away, you're not supposed to sublet it. How is the discrepancy explained here?

I will need to go away for a couple of months, and I can't afford to pay the huge rent on top of my trip expenses. But with the ridiculously skyrocketing rents here, my expensive apartment is a comparatively good deal, and it wouldn't make sense to give it up right now. Everybody's subletting, so what is the REAL story here?
