Normally I would advise anyone in your situation to seek out housing in a larger, professionally managed building where you would not have such problems. But you've stated that you "can't afford" to move; what you probably mean is that your current rent is substantially below market rate. So you have a trade off - low rent in exchange for living under the watchful eye of your landlady.

If you've decided to stay, they learn to adapt to the situation ... probably with a mixture of discretion and politeness you can work things out. There are worse things than an 80-something grandma type watching who goes into your apartment. Sometimes old people complain just because they are lonely or because they want to talk. While this is not of any concern to you in a legal sense, a kind word or a smile here and there may help smooth things over tremendously.

Also ignore Jeremy's advice ... 'retaliatory eviction' defense does not apply to owner occupied dwellings. And creating more rudeness really doesn't solve the problem here.
