actually, the voice is still yr best bet, short of your friends hearing about a place. watch the website like a hawk during the days leading up to, and including, your visit to the city. they update the listings almost every night @ midnight; on tuesdays @ 1pm they upload all the listings that will be appearing in the following day's edition, so you have a jump on the non-online crowd (i guess there's still a few of them). then it's just a matter of calling and looking and jumping at the first thing that you can live with. the voice has better listings than any other paper, tho the times and sometimes even Loot (www.lootusa.com) have no fee apts.

since you will be here for a week you will fare better than others who don't have the time to invest. it will be especially hard to find a place w/o a broker in manhattan, but it is possible. get your friends to keep their eyes open, maybe even look at some places for you.

avoid those listing services unless you really have lotsa cash to throw around. see the earlier posting about all the busts they've been making in that area lately.
