PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES FOR SURVIVORS AND
FAMILIES OF ATTACK VICTIMS

FROM THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION:

As they begin to move past the initial shock of last week's deadly terrorist
attacks on the United States, survivors and victims' families are faced with a
number of difficult questions.

"Do I have to continue paying rent even though I can't occupy my
apartment?"
"Can I still use my spouse's employee benefits even though he or she is
missing?"
"How can I help the minor children of my missing neighbors?"

To help survivors and victims' families address these and other critical legal
questions, the American Bar Association and the Federal Emergency
Management Agency have created a toll-free disaster legal services
hotline. In addition, the ABA has created a Web site designed to provide critical
information to victims of the attack, lawyers wishing to help victims, lawyers in
need of disaster assistance, and military personnel who have legal needs as a
result of the attack or because of active or reserve mobilization. The ABA Young
Lawyers Division, pursuant to a long-standing agreement with FEMA, created the
disaster legal services hotline for survivors and the families of attack victims.
The toll-free hotline number is (866) 606-0626.

Volunteer lawyers from six affected states and the District of Columbia will
respond to calls to the hotline. More than 1,000 lawyers have already
volunteered their assistance in this effort. In addition to the hotline, survivors
and victims' families can visit the ABA's Web site,
http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/disaster.html, to obtain information about
the many local pro bono and lawyer referral programs that are operating to
address the needs of those affected by the attacks.
