Investigate neighborhood BEFORE you move in

Landlord and Broker statements about how "nice" a neighborhood is have to be taken with a grain of salt (nice for whom?). Confirm anything verbal statements you've been told about an apartment before moving in, and get promises in writing. That's standard stuff.

Maybe its too late now, but you might want to confront your fears about your neighborhood. Real people live, work and grow up in such neighborhoods. A lot of times a neighborhoods reputation exceeds its actual danger. Maybe checking with the local police department or taking walks around would help you feel more comfortable there.

Too bad you didn't do this before you chose to move there.
