Yes i knew i would have to leave but that didnt answer my question, Would the landlord have to pay for me to live some where else or would i be placed in a shelter???????

: Some basement apartments are legal and some aren't. Generally, there must be 2 means of egress from any apartment.

: As has been said before, don't focus on the "legality" of the apartment. Instead decide if its what you like. There are illegal apartments that are immaculate and legal apartments that are hovels. Some people prefer basement apartments becuase they are cheaper and are usually nice and warm in the winter and cooler in the summer.

: There are tens of thousands of "illegal" living spaces in the city and most politicians rightfully turn a "blind eye" to the practice because the apartments provide well needed housing. But if the city does cite an owner for an illegal apartment, you'd obviously have to leave.
