is a six month lease legal

Posted by Greg Harr on October 30, 2001 at 14:21:35:

Five of us are slated to move into a 5 bedroom on the upperwest side. not rent stabilized or controlled. It's been "passed on" from friends to friends, etc. for the past 6/7 years. a price of $4400 was worked out for the new lease. This past Friday our sketchy building manager said that they'd like to sign us to a six month lease (with a "possible" yearlong extension) becaue he said that the owner has a relative who might want to move in to the apartment in April (which we think is a suspect story) - we've been negotiating this new lease for a couple months and he waits until less than a week before the 1st of the month to spring this on us!?!?. We turned over completed applications and about $9,000 almost a month ago and he never mentioned anything about a 6 month lease. We told him we don't want a six month lease (what a pain in the ass to move in and then have to move out in such a short period and it's a big place = lots of moving). He's basically playing the "my hands are tied" and "I'm just the 'messenger' from the owner" games. Needless to say we're all going to be homeless in a couple days (on the 1st) and we feel like we're going to have no choice but to sign this damn 6 month lease. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for what we can do?? Anything?? is a 6 month lease even legal??
