It's still being done. But the LL have gotten much better in getting rid of them. The combination of high rent decontrol and a booming (until recently) housing market has given the LLs much greater incentive to hunt down and eliminate illegal sublets in their buildings.

If you take an illegal sublet, keep in mind that at any time, the LL could find you out and start an eviction.

: There are some many sublets in New York City. Are many of them illegal? Is this something many people do?
