: I was just wondering why so many people in New York rent apartments, as opposed to owning. I believe New York City has the highest rate of renting in the country - with around 70% of household renting. In most parts of the country, far more people own, than rent.
another resource: NYC Dept of City Planning:
One or Two family Residence
One and two family residences, the largest use of city land,
are found mostly in Staten Island, Queens, southern
Brooklyn, and the eastern and northwestern parts of The
Bronx. They occupy 30 percent of the total land area.
Multi-Family Residence or Mixed Residence and
Commercial
More than two-thirds of the city's residences are in
multi-family buildings (three or more dwelling units) or in
mixed residential and commercial buildings. Concentrations are
in Manhattan's mid- to high-rise buildings and in three to six
story buildings in Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx and Staten
Island's north shore. These residences occupy 13 percent of
the total land area.
