: I live in New york. I rent a basement apartment in a one family house. I want to know how I can go about finding out if this is an illegal apartment. We Share a con ed meter and gas line and i am sure there are many violations down here. I would like to know if anyone knows about these kinds of apartments and what my rights are! thanks

goto nyc.gov, select Buildings department
they have an online database that might say whether the legal occupancy is one or two families. or go in person in your borough.
DoB also has info on the subject 'illegal apartment': they're mostly in charge of cracking down on them.

also on nyc.gov, try Finance: then the Real Estate Tax section. find your building and its 'code'. then read the description in the pop-up box.

for more info on illegal units, search here for Claire Shulman, Queens borough president: she' got a great booklet online.
