How to charge for storage

Posted by smd on January 12, 2002 at 05:01:11:

I have a 2-bedroom, non-regulated apartment in Brooklyn. I rented one room to a roommate (verbal, month-to-month lease). I gave her notice to move by Jan 15 and she moved out two weeks before that date. (She did pay rent up to the 15th). She left some of her stuff in the apartment and promised to come back the next day to get the stuff, as well as clean. (She is very dirty). She did not come back the next day, so I called her a week later. She said she would come the following Sunday and never showed up. I left her a msg to come get her stuff this Sunday. My question is: If her stuff is still there after the 15th, can I charge her for storing it? Do I have to put it in an actual storage facility? And if I can charge her for storage while her stuff is in my apartment, how do I calculate a fee? Thanks in advance.
