Sorry this happened to you. But waiting for a robbery to occur is no way to realize that the lock on the window doesn't work and that there are other security problems. You've got to be more proactive about these, checking before you move in. Also, renter's insurance would cover a claim such as this. Consider buying it in the future.

Bars on the windows would be a good idea (although, since you are on the ground floor, you must have at least one window from which you could exit in a fire.) The cost of installing the fire-safe type of bars could run into the thousands of dollars, depending on how many windows. Still, it would be worth discussing this with your landlord. Perhaps he would pay for them or you and him could split the cost - its sure cheaper than being robbed. Obviously, if you don't feel safe about the location, you won't be there for long, a point which you should make to your in a non-confrontational way.
