Landlord Asking for Social Security Number

Posted by consigliere on February 06, 2002 at 08:57:22:

Recently there was a thread about landlords asking for the Social Security numbers of all the people living in an apartment, especially when a rent stabilized lease is coming up for renewal.

There is nothing in the Housing Maintenance Code (HMC) or the Rent Stabilization Code (RSC) that allows a landlord to ask for Social Security numbers. In fact, the RSC allows for Social Security numbers to be deleted when a landlord attempts to deregulate an apartment because of high rent ($2,000) and high income ($175,000).

Below is a link to an article from Bankrate.com, Guard your Social Security number, which should be relevant to this issue.
